Kayaking for Health
I talked with this kayaking couple, both in their mid-sixties, and they told me that they got into kayaking for their cardiovascular health. They hike also, but kayaking gives them the opportunity to work their upper bodies, and rest their legs, as well as keep their heart rates up. The gentleman told me he much preferred being outdoors and on the water as a form of aerobics; their doctor had told them that they should try aerobics so they bought his and hers kayaks.
They pack a healthy picnic lunch, consisting of fruits and raw vegetables. They also take along bottled water, a first aid kit and their cameras, and spend the day on the water at least 3 days a week.
I asked if they ever do whitewater and in unison answered a resounding “No!” She said that they were not that adventurous so they stick to the flat water just below the whitewater of Snowden Gorge, on the James River in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.
